MEDIA ADVISORY: Exploring the challenge of addiction through ‘The Science of Addiction Symposium’ at MU

WHAT: To ignite an important conversation about the challenge of addiction, the University of Missouri’s College of Arts and Science will host “The Science of Addiction Symposium.” The event will highlight current investigations into the problem of addiction; facilitate collaborations on approaches, insights and challenges; and add momentum toward a nationally recognized Center of Excellence through the perspectives of teaching, research and practice.

WHO:
Speakers include:

  • Sandra A. Brown, vice chancellor for research and a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at University of California, San Diego
  • Robert O. Messing, director of the Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research and a professor of neurology and neuroscience at The University of Texas at Austin
  • Multidisciplinary faculty from MU, University of Missouri – Kansas City, Missouri University of Science and Technology and University of Missouri – St. Louis

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6

  • 8:15 a.m. – Keynote: Alcohol, Drugs and the Adolescent Brain by Sandra A. Brown
  • 12:45 p.m. – Keynote: New Compounds for Treating Alcohol Use Disorder by Robert O. Messing

WHERE: Monsanto Auditorium, Bond Life Sciences Center, MU campus
