MEDIA ADVISORY: First Roar, Step Forward Day and Tiger Walk among events welcoming incoming and returning MU students

WHAT:           University of Missouri officials will welcome new students with hundreds of Welcome Week events, including the traditional Paint the M, Midnight BBQ and Tiger Walk. The activities will begin Wednesday, Aug. 15.

Welcome Week includes more than 200 events, with 120 current MU students serving as Welcome Week leaders.

Wednesday, Aug. 15

Residence Hall Move-In
9 a.m.–6 p.m.
MU residence halls

Wednesday marks the official opening day when students can move into the residence halls. This year, students and families will check in at the Hearnes Center before heading to individual residence halls, where about 900 campus and community volunteers will help students move into their rooms. Some students, such as those in Freshman Interest Groups, may move in earlier. For media wishing to cover the move-in, please contact the MU News Bureau at (573) 882-6211.

First Roar
7:30–8:15 p.m.
Mizzou Arena

First Roar is a new kickoff event. New students will parade from Tiger Plaza to Mizzou Arena to learn various Mizzou traditions, hear from MU Chancellor Alexander Cartwright and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs James Spain, and take a class photo.

Block Parties
8:30–11 p.m.
Residence Halls

The Residence Hall Association will host block parties for residence hall neighborhoods. All Mizzou students are invited to participate.

Thursday, Aug. 16

Glow Yoga
7:30–8:45 p.m.
Traditions Plaza

Glow Yoga will provide students with the opportunity to exercise and meditate with glow sticks and music in a fun, relaxing environment.

Midnight BBQ
10 p.m.–1 a.m.
Rollins Street in front of the MU Student Center

The Midnight BBQ is an annual Mizzou event that allows students to meet new friends, relax before classes begin, and enjoy BBQ and funnel cakes.

Friday, Aug. 17

Paint the M
7:30–8:30 p.m.
Faurot Field

New students will paint the “M” on the north side of Faurot Field, taking part in a Mizzou tradition that dates back to 1927.

Welcome Week Resource Fair and Job Open House
1–4 p.m.
MU Student Center

Dozens of campus offices will show students the best of college life at Mizzou and resources available on campus.

Escape Ellis Library
5–8 p.m.
Ellis Library

Breakout CoMo will host an experience for students to find clues and solve puzzles in an effort to break out of the main library on MU’s campus.

Saturday, Aug. 18

Step Forward Day
8:30 a.m.–noon
Sites across Columbia

During Step Forward Day, new students will participate in service projects throughout the Columbia community. Participants will meet at Tiger Plaza for registration, then ride buses to service agencies across Columbia.

Student Org Day
10 a.m. –6 p.m.
MU Student Center

More than 30 student organizations will host events in the Student Center for students looking to get involved on campus.

American Authors Concert
9–11:30 p.m.
Carnahan Quadrangle (Rain site: Jesse Auditorium. In the event the concert is moved inside, students will need their student ID card to enter.)

Indie rock band American Authors will perform at a free concert for students.

Sunday, Aug. 19

Campus Pizza Party
4–6 p.m.
Shakespeare’s Pizza, 225 S. Ninth St.

Students can stop by Shakespeare’s Pizza, a traditional Columbia favorite, and enjoy free food, beverages, music and more.

Transfer Student Reception
5–6 p.m.
2206 MU Student Center

This reception offers new transfer students a chance to get together, meet other transfer students and learn about opportunities on campus.

Tiger Walk
6–7:45 p.m.
Francis Quadrangle

Incoming students will run through the Columns toward Jesse Hall to symbolically mark their entrance into Mizzou. Immediately following Tiger Walk, members of Marching Mizzou will perform select pieces from their repertoire. The public is invited to attend.
