MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Department of Student Life and the Safe Mizzou Coalition Host “Safe Mizzou 2015”

WHAT:  Safe Mizzou 2015 is a week of events designed to share information so University of Missouri students, faculty and staff can love, learn, work and play in a safe environment.

Week long events include:

  • Personal Safety Fair Featuring the ReadyCampus Program
    Learn how to check on a friend in need, practice online safety, and develop personal emergency preparedness plans. The event features the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency’s ReadyCampus program. Free pizza, t-shirts and first aid kits will be provided by MU’s Department of Student Life and distributed while supplies last.
    10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, Kuhlman Court (Rain site: 1st floor of the MU Student Center)
  • Citizen’s Response to Active Threat Training
    This comprehensive course helps students prepare for active shooter/violent intruder incidents that could occur in the workplace, school or public settings. Participants are taught integrated strategies incorporating environmental design, technology and action by those in immediate danger.
    6 – 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, S 016 Memorial Student Union
  • 15th Annual Fire Factor and Room Burn/Pedestrian and Vehicle Education (PAVE)
    Enjoy fire safety events such as fire extinguisher training and an obstacle course. At 11:50 a.m., there will be a simulated room burn to demonstrate the speed and ferocity of fire. Learn more about STRIPES, seat belt safety, cross walk etiquette and more! Free pizza, drinks and T-shirts will be available while supplies last.

Monday, September 14

STOP for the Signs
10:50 a.m.-1 p.m.
Various Locations
Different colored stop signs will be placed at various campus locations with information about specific emergency and personal safety situations.

Tuesday, September 15

Personal Safety Fair
10 a.m.–2 p.m.
Kuhlman Court (Rain Site: 1st Floor of the MU Student Center)

Party Hosting 101
12–1 p.m.
Women’s Center, G108 MU Student Center
Learn how to host a party and have fun while being safe.

Citizen’s Response to Active Threat Training
6-7:30 p.m.
S 016 Memorial Student Union

Safety Walk

The 42nd Annual Safety Walk is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff from different campus departments to identify any structural and environmental safety concerns on our campus. Participants will be split into groups that will be assigned to specific parts of campus to record any safety concerns.

Wednesday, September 16

Free Movie: The Hunting Ground

The Hunting Ground is an expose of rape crimes on U.S. college campuses, their institutional cover-ups and the devastating toll on students and their families.

Pizza with Police
10 p.m.-1 a.m.
9th Street in front of RJI
The MU Police Department will educate students traveling to and from the downtown area about alcohol laws, alcohol overdoses, and responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages. This is not an alcohol enforcement activity but rather an opportunity for the student population to connect with YOUR police officers. Pizza will be provided.

RAD is a self-defense class that combines classroom, physical techniques and simulation portions to enhance a woman’s ability to defend herself if attacked. Registration and attendance at all classes is required. For registration or more information, please visit mupolice.missouri.edu/rad.
