CALENDAR ITEM: 2015 Communication Week to Kick off 75th Anniversary of the Department of Communication at MU

WHAT: Comm Week, MU’s Department of Communication’s annual week of celebration, will convene April 20 – April 24 on the University of Missouri campus. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the department, and the celebration includes a lineup of guest speakers including alums of the program who are sharing their career successes with current communication students. Thursday will include a poster session in Stotler Lounge where undergraduate students will present their research.

“Comm Week is a celebration and showcase of the work our students and faculty have done throughout the year,” said Mitchell McKinney, professor and chair of the Department of Communication at MU. “This year we’re celebrating a remarkable milestone in the history of the department, 75 years of communication at Mizzou! We have a full year of special activities planned as students, faculty and department alumni will share memories about their time at Mizzou and in Switzler Hall; we look forward to kicking it off with this special week.”

Highlights include:

  • Speak Up! A Public Speaking Showcase – an interactive hour of public speaking featuring four speakers from the department’s public speaking course, 6 p.m., Monday, April 20, 102 Engineering Building West.
  • 7th Annual Trivia Night and Silent Auction – hosted by the department’s honor society, Lamda Pi Eta. The evening will include food, trivia and an auction benefiting the Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center, 6 p.m, Tuesday, April 21, Stotler Lounge, Memorial Union.
  • Keynote Address – Damon Romine, director of communications and marketing for the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, will present “From Mizzou to Hollywood: Lessons Learned in the Communication and Entertainment Industry” at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 22, in the Benton Bingham Ballroom, Memorial Union.
  • 75th Mizzou Comm Birthday Party – Comm Week will wrap up with a celebration and kick off of the Department of Communication’s 75th anniversary year. Founded in May 1940 as the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts, the birthday party on the Quad will feature music, food and birthday cake, 12 – 2 p.m., (remarks at 1 p.m.), Friday, April 24, Francis Quadrangle.
