MEDIA ADVISORY: MU Professor to Discuss “Why Do Indian People Spend So Much Money on Their Weddings?” at MU Saturday Morning Science Lecture

WHAT:  If Friday’s lavish (and obviously expensive) royal wedding event leaves you desiring more high-priced wedding fun, the University of Missouri’s Saturday Morning Science talk may help explain why you feel this way.

Mary Shenk, assistant professor of cultural anthropology, will discuss Indian weddings and the thousands of dollars parents spend on their children’s weddings – but not necessarily their futures.

Beyond the cultural significance of the costly event, Shenk also will discuss parental motivation for these displays. Shenk will refer to studies of bird and deer behavior to explore the reasons for this particular human behavior.
