MEDIA ADVISORY: MU to Host 2010 Mizzou Diversity Summit

WHAT: The 2010 Mizzou Diversity Summit will bring the MU campus community together to discuss and plan strategies to strengthen MU’s identity as an environment and culture that values diversity in its many ways and forms.

Participants will learn of the progress the university has made over the course of the past two years, gather information, contribute individual perspectives and be part of a dialogue intended to further the university’s progress toward a more inclusive and welcoming Mizzou community.

The summit will begin with a town hall meeting on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when Roger Worthington, the assistant deputy chancellor for diversity at MU, will introduce Chancellor Brady Deaton, who will deliver the state of diversity address. The summit will continue on Thursday with several workshops and panels. Panel topics include: “Organizational Justice: Fairness and Equity at Work”, “Translating Transgender”, “Faculty Diversity”, “Research and Tenure”, the “Culturally Competent Leadership Workshop”, and more.

At 4:30 p.m., Thursday, University of Missouri students, faculty members and one organization will be honored with Inclusive Excellence Awards. The awards are given to individuals and groups who have made exemplary contributions to any area of diversity at MU.

WHO: Kenji Yoshino, the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Constitutional Law at New York University, will give a keynote address, “Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights”. Yoshino is a specialist in constitutional law, civil rights and employment law, and law and literature. He has written for academic journals as well as The New York Times and Slate. He has appeared on Charlie Rose and The O’Reilly Factor.

Dozens of campus leaders will participate and moderate the many workshops and panels.
