MEDIA ADVISORY: MU College of Engineering to host ‘Research Day’

WHAT: The MU College of Engineering will host Research Day on Tuesday, April 24. Topics to be discussed include big data analytics, biomedical innovations and sustainability, as well as leadership techniques that positively impact our community, state, nation and world.

Keynote speeches include:

“The Leadership Academy” – Marlon Taylor, senior, industrial and manufacturing systems engineering major, and Samantha Warren, senior, electrical engineering and computer science major, will discuss student leadership opportunities including:

  • Professional development workshops
  • Networking and job search opportunities via Handshake
  • The MU Engineering Leadership, Engagement and Career Development certificate

“Got Big Data?” – Prasad Calyam, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, will discuss:

  • Why big data related to science and engineering is important for our society’s future
  • Where big data is housed and who really owns it
  • How academia and industry groups are evolving their big data ecosystems

“Pharmaceutic Formulations for Pets and People” – Bret Ulery, principle investigator of the Biomodulatory Materials Engineering Laboratory and assistant professor of chemical engineering, will discuss:

  • Why Mizzou is an excellent institution for translational and precision medicine
  • Collaborative strengths that already exist on campus and how they are growing
  • Specific examples of projects in this area that are ongoing here

“Rubbish to Roads” – Bill Buttlar, director of the Mizzou Asphalt Pavement and Innovation Laboratory and the Glen Barton Chair of Flexible Pavements in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will cover:

  • Why asphalt is the most recycled material on the planet
  • What waste materials are being used in asphalt, and which ones actually improve durability and sustainability
  • What innovations can be expected from the Mizzou Asphalt Pavement and Innovation Laboratory in the near future
