May 8th, 2017

Story Contact: Christian Basi, 573-882-4430,

EDITOR’S NOTE: To prevent the public from thinking this drill is an actual emergency, any help you can provide in publicizing this event in advance will be of service to the community and greatly appreciated by the University.

WHAT:           An emergency simulation at the University of Missouri Research Reactor Center (MURR).

WHO:            Participating agencies include the Columbia Fire Department, Joint Communications, MU Police Department, University Hospital and Clinics, MU Environmental Health and Safety, MURR staff, and MU News Bureau.

WHEN:          The morning of Monday, May 8.

WHERE:        MU Research Reactor Center (just south of Stadium Boulevard, west of Providence Road). No media will be allowed inside the emergency site area during the drill.

WHY:             The Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires facilities such as the MU Research Reactor to conduct regular emergency preparedness drills with outside support groups. These drills include the emergency response and support organizations outside the reactor that normally would be involved in a real emergency.

NOTE:            In the event of severe weather on May 8, the drill will be rescheduled for May 15.
