MEDIA ADVISORY: MU professors to be honored with first 2019 Kemper Fellowships

$10,000 to be awarded to elite MU teachers

WHAT: The first 2019 William T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence, which include a $10,000 cash award, will be given Monday to two select outstanding teachers at the University of Missouri. Chancellor Alexander N. Cartwright and Steve Sowers, president and CEO of the central and eastern Missouri region of Commerce Bank, will surprise the teachers during class.

WHEN & WHERE: Monday, March 11

 First presentation — meet at 8 a.m.

Outside the provost’s office, 110 Jesse Hall

Second presentation — meet at 1 p.m.

Lobby of Reynolds Alumni Center

Note: The award is a surprise to the recipient; therefore, the classroom location will not be revealed until immediately prior to the presentation.

 NOTE: The William T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence were created in 1991 with a $500,000 gift to honor outstanding MU teachers. Commerce Bank manages the trust fund.

Kemper, a 1926 graduate of MU, was a well-known civic leader in Kansas City until his death in 1989. His 52-year career in banking included top positions in banks in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.
