MEDIA ADVISORY: MU to Host Seminar on Jane Austen and Her Contemporaries

WHAT:
The University of Missouri will host a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Seminar for College and University Teachers this year. The topic will be “Jane Austen and Her Contemporaries.” The seminar’s 16 participants from academic institutions across the country will examine the works of Jane Austen within the context of other less-studied female writers of her time.
Several seminar events will be free and open to the public.
- Laura Mandell of Texas A & M University will speak on “18th Connect and Digitizing the Archive” at 3 p.m. on June 29th in Room 102 of Tate Hall. 18th Connect is an online database of scholarship about the eighteenth century.
- Laura Mooneyham-White and Steve Ramsay, both from the University of Nebraska, will speak on “Cracking Free Indirect Discourse via Pride and Prejudice” at 3 p.m. on July 13th in Room 102 of Tate Hall.
- The NEH Seminar’s participants also will have the opportunity to publicly present the results of their independent research projects at 10:30 a.m. on July 18th and July 20th in Ellis Library’s Colonnade.
“MU hasn’t hosted an NEH summer seminar for nearly 20 years,” said Devoney Looser, professor of English in the College of Arts and Science and director of the seminar at MU. “We hope this seminar will not only enlighten its participants, but will have ripple effects when they bring back the insights of the seminar to their campus and students.”
